5 Museums in Cilento you don't know about!

Cilento isn’t only clear waters and spectacular beaches, but it’s also about history, culture and traditions. For these reasons, Mandato Consulting would like to suggest 5 museums in Cilento, a little hidden away, that you may have never heard of.

The first museum we’d like to suggest is the Certosa of Padula, a Unesco World Heritage site and also one of the biggest monumental buildings in the South of Italy. Demanded by Tommaso Sanseverino in 1306 and completed in 1700, Certosa of Padula holds a Baroque façade, majolicas of the eighteenth century and frescoes dating back to the 16th and 18th century. It has the biggest European cloister dominated by arcades and 84 archs!

In addition to Paestum temples, we’d also like to recommend the archaeological museum opposite the main entrance to the park!   You will find timeless masterpieces such as the Tomb of the Diver, ornaments deriving from the excavation of Hera shrine to the outlet of Sele and a collection of funeral paintings.

Not far from Paestum, you can find the excavations of Velia in Ascea, a real museum under the open sky where it is possible to admire the ruins of the old town of Velia, polis of Magna Graecia and called Elea by the Romans. Velia is also well-known for being the native land of the philosophers Parmenide and Zenone.

Carrying on with our trip, we’ll reach the evocative Living Museum of the Sea in Pioppi where you will also find the Mediterranean diet Museum! Opened in 1996, the living museum of the sea houses around 100 marine species arranged in three room, each room holds a typical habitat of Cilento!

Finally, close to the clear waters in Palinuro and precisely not far from Ficocelle beach, we can find the Antiquarium. Built in the sixties, this building overlooking the sea houses several archaeological finds and obsidian furnishings dating back 6000 years, the ruins of an antique prehistoric village and so much more!

Whichever museum you will choose, we are sure that you will fall in love with it! As always, our staff will be happy to guide you during this trip. We will also be happy to suggest the events linked to these archaeological sites!
